Hey GRL,
In a sea of trends and constantly changing aesthetics it can be hard to figure out your own signature style, and keep pieces in your closet that you love.
I know I have a lot of dresses, jumpsuits, and party clothes that I’ve definitely only worn once or twice and haven’t found a need to wear them again or repurpose them.
But, as I’ve grown as a gal, and figured out what pieces I flock towards, Ive taken away a couple tips and tricks that helped me determine what I felt most comfortable in, and what my signature style identity truly was.
1. What styles do you feel most comfortable in?
Try this out: Look in your camera roll or your instagram feed and mark a couple outfit pictures you absolutely love.
Mark some that you kinda liked but wish you did something different, and then mark or think of the pieces you’ve bought that sit in your closet or you seldom wear.
Why don’t you wear them? Is it a size issue or a style issue?
If it’s a style issue, what don’t you like about it? Are there similar styled pieces in your throw away pile? If so, make a mental note that you don’t like those types of pieces.
If you sort of like trendy pieces like corsets, dainty tops, and mesh turtle necks then keep a couple of those in your wardrobe, but don’t go crazy on PrettyLittleThing and FashionNova with those pieces because as most trends do, they’ll go out of style too, and then you would’ve wasted your money on an entire closet full of trendy pieces that don’t fit your style anymore.
My suggestion: After you make a list of what styles you love and feel most comfortable in confident in, buy more pieces that fit that style.
For me, its a dressy casual look. I love to look really put together and as if I put a lot of thought into my outfit but also an effortless slay. This for me could be a really cute and dressy shirt with a pair of mom jeans, or a cute sweater with a pair of elaborate pants— you know cause balance.
I also really like streetwear and super casual looks, so I’ve been incorporating more gym shoes and tee’s into my wardrobe than before.
But since I know that I prefer those dressy casual looks a lot more, I limit the amount of pieces I buy for my streetwear style persona, and even think of ways to merge them together.
2. What colors and silhouettes do you flock to?
Going off of the last tip, take a look in your closet and see what colors and silhoettes you have the most of. Are you more into colors or do you prefer neutrals?
If half of your closet is black, I hate to break it to you sis, but you probably don’t have yellow and pink in your signature style.
Now if you have lots of nudes and earthy tones like green, mustard, and burnt orange then your style probably isn’t super neutral—black and white tones.
If you literally have a coloring book in your closet, then you should not be buying nudes and earthy tones, you like color! Embrace that!
Now this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t incorporate a pop of color every now and then, or maybe buy that black sweater when your closet is mostly colors.
It’s about having a balance, and making it your own. So maybe you buy that sweater and wear it with your favorite pink pants.
Or you take your white coat and wear a burnt orange and black outfit underneath. But try to keep your signature color style in those outfits.
As for silhouettes, as big girls we know that everything does not work on everybody.
Some things that smaller girls can wear, we might not feel the best in because it cinches a certain way that we don’t like, or the fabric holds on to our bodies weirdly, and that’s okay.
It’s all up to personal preference and what you feel the best in.
This is in no way shape or form saying that you cannot wear certain styles of clothes. If your go to is something very form fitting– which is honestly one of my personal favs, by all means power to you sis!
But, I understand that everyone is not a fan, so while some things may feel frumpy or unflattering on smaller bodies, they may be someone else’s go-to to feel like their best self.
Which is the goal of finding your signature style. Finding what works best for you and your body and makes you feel comfortable, confident, and sexy.
3. If you had to choose an outfit to wear from day to evening what would you choose?
While this might not seem like a big deal when discovering your style, many of us tend to become different people when we decide to go out for dinner or drinks or to a party.
So, if you couldn’t change before you had to go to an event in the evening what would you choose to wear that would get you through the day but also be appropriate for a trip to the bar with your girls?
Thinking of this while shopping also saved me from constantly buying clothes that literally get worn one time and then tossed into the back of my closet for 6-8 months until I think its safe to wear again or find an event that would work for it.
For me, I’d choose something pretty simple like a button down and loose mom jeans, and maybe a short chunky heel.
Or a pair of combat boots, a tight black jean or leather legging and my favorite oversized graphic tee– this is very much giving my two style personalities… lmaooo.
Now that you know what you’re wearing, what vibe does the outfit give off? Did you pick something similar to what you said made you feel most confident and comfortable in your IG pics? Is it a color and style that you prefer?
9/10 you probably chose an outfit that you absolutely love, and that’s good, because now you can pick outfits that you absolutely love and feel like you can take on the world in.
So, what did you pick? Do you feel like you found the style personality that you like the most? Or are you still a bit lost? Wherever you are, its OKAY! We all are at different points in our style journey’s and that’s cool. Just keep trying new pieces and mixing up your outfits and I guarantee you’ll find your signature style in no time!
Do you boo. x.
