HEY GRL HEY!
I missed y’all so much. No long intro this time, lets get intooo it!
I’ve recently been trying to incorporate more streetwear pieces into my wardrobe, because while I like to think of myself as #MSPUTITON, I’ve realized I truly stick to more traditionally “girly” styles and rarely dip into streetwear looks. And everyone does not want to wear dresses and heels all the time–everyone being me.
So in trying to figure out my streetwear style, Ive highlighted a few looks of Inspo that I would love to see big girls replicate or incorporate into their own wardrobe to achieve those really cute effortless looks!
Oversized Tees
This seems to be the staple in most of the Pinterest streetwear looks. Now I know what you’re going to say, “Ken, all we used to wear was oversized tees to hide our body, isn’t this the same thing?” and to that I would say no. While society used to literally force us into unisex tees, I think it adds to that comfy aspect of the whole streetwear vibe. Like “I just threw this on but I still made you give a double take cause I look that raw.”
And the tees don’t have to be the ones that Torrid or other random plus size brands throw at us! Please no Disney Collab tees for your streetwear looks babe. I beg.
But investing in maybe 3-4 graphic tees that fit a little loose that you can pair with multiple bottoms is chefs kiss. A few stores I can think of to purchase tees are Fashion Nova, SHEIN, The Style Animal, and Target/Walmart/Burlington Coat Factory– for those that prefer in store. I would also look in the mens sections as they go up more in size, and fit to be wider.
Cargo Pants
I don’t know about you, but I am so jealous of the girls with the woodland pattern cargo pants. Ive wanted a pair for the past couple months and I cannot find any in plus sizes. But there are plenty other options for us in solid colors like black and dark olive that should get the job done just as well.
I found a couple pairs on Fashion Nova, but I am sure other big retailers would also have similar styles.
Gym Shoes
As a girl who wears mostly dressy shoes and has a pretty decent heel collection, I can say that I am absolutely not a sneakerhead. However if you are, you can skip this section but download my besties app Kickstroid that lets you know all of the newest sneaker drops and lets you connect with other sneakerheads, so y’all can share in sneakerheadedness? I don’t know! But go download the app!
Dunks and Jordan 1’s have taken social media by storm, and are most popular with new sneaker/street style entrants. These can sometimes be hard to find though, so if you’re open to it check on TikTok for #fencefinds to get the DHGate replicas instead of paying 400+ for shoes with an MSRP of $90-$125. We don’t care where the stuff came from over here, as long as the look is achieved.
Styling
Now that we have the components, let’s talk about styling streetwear.
As a person who only wears streetwear seldom, the biggest thing I’ve learned from the streetwear girlies is that matching and layering are key. Before you can run with streetwear and give outfits like @NotoriousKIA or @Wisdom8 (Wisdom Kaye), you have to walk. And the easiest way to walk is to focus on pairing your clothes with like colors. So for instance if you have a shirt like mine above with Pink as the center color, find a way to accentuate the pink and bring that most into focus. This is why I paired that shirt with army pants, as camo is basically a neutral, and white shoes. But If I wanted to bring the pink out even more, I would pair the black and pink Ken shirt with those same camo pants, pink dunks, and pink shades with a black or white jacket.
You still want to find balance between the most noticeable color–don’t go wearing all pink unless that’s your style. But break up the color and bring it down and up in your outfit to create balance.
As long as you keep that in mind, you’ll succeed.
Do You x.
